In 1934 Christiansen held a competition to name his toy company. He decided on Lego which was based on a contraction of “leg godi” meaning play well in Danish. The staff member who suggested this won a prize.
The company chugged along until the death of Ole Kirk. His son then took over the company and also oversaw the toy’s switch to plastics. From here the popularity grew exponentially. In 1968 not only were 18 million sets sold, but the first park was opened.
It remains a toy much loved by children, their parents and grandparents. In part because it is constructive, creative, and educational.
