All Kids Want A Lego Activity Table

There is a reason why Lego has been a popular toy for both boys and girls since the 1960s. It can be both educational and hours of fun for the entire family. A Lego Activity Table can only serve to make playing with them all the more fun.

There is no shortage of variety of these tables, they come in sizes to suit all ages and colors to suit all tastes. The tables serve to allow for the blocks to be played with in a more controlled space. The design is simple, a wooden or plastic surface with a tabletop made of Lego material to fit pieces securely on to it.

The pieces are brightly colored plastic blocks that fit together through a system of knobs and matching indentations. Being able to fit any two pieces together allows both children and adults to create a whole range of fantastic constructions. The surface is made up entirely of the knobs so that structures can be securely built up from the top of it. From this surface the sky is the limit, children, and adults, can build castles, railway lines and entire cities if they wish.

These tables are also a good solution to storing the blocks. The pieces are a great deal of fun to play with, but not so much fun to stand on. Most tables will have some kind of storage for the blocks just under the surface. The most common is a drawer, or even a few drawers, to store the blocks.

It truly is a toy that has endured through the ages. It originated in Denmark from the Lego group, which was begun in the carpentry shop of Ole Kirk Christiansen in 1916. During the Great Depression Ole Kirk switched from furniture making to toy making.

In 1934 Christiansen held a competition to name his toy company. He decided on Lego which was based on a contraction of “leg godi” meaning play well in Danish. The staff member who suggested this won a prize.

The company chugged along until the death of Ole Kirk. His son then took over the company and also oversaw the toy’s switch to plastics. From here the popularity grew exponentially. In 1968 not only were 18 million sets sold, but the first park was opened.

It remains a toy much loved by children, their parents and grandparents. In part because it is constructive, creative, and educational. A far cry from television and computer games, the Lego Activity Table is a welcome and appreciated addition to this great toy which has been a popular choice for over 50 years.
